The destination informs the journey

Knowing where we are going to, and our ultimate destination, is essential for us to plan our journey. I have been thinking about this a lot for the past month as the ExCo and I work on our strategy for the next 3 years and onwards. But knowing the destination on its own is not enough to set out on the journey. Y

ou need to know when you will need to arrive, how much risk there is of delay, are we traveling alone or with others, do we all need to arrive there at the same time….and so the questions go on.

It’s a lot like when I plan a business trip. Let’s say I have to be in New York for a meeting - what factors do I need to consider?

OK, when do I need to be there? Let’s say in 2 weeks’ time and I am going to be travelling alone. I can now start planning my options to make the journey.

If I have two weeks I could consider going by boat or plane. Do I have the time to make a boat journey? What other commitments do I have that mean this limits my choice to a plane?

You get the idea, there are many more questions I would ask myself before making my final choice.

Now imagine I wasn’t travelling alone, that others were going to be at this meeting with me and were coming from different countries. This adds more complexity to the choices to travel.

This is a very simple explanation of the kind of questions we have been asking ourselves as an ExCo when planning our destination to reach in 3 years’ time.

Knowing that the different businesses are starting out in different places what are our choices for getting there? What will we have to do differently, do more of, who do we need to partner with, where do we need to build new skills? How should we collaborate across the group, what kind of technology do we need to support us, what plans do we need to put in place for people development, marketing and branding?

Creating our business strategy is a never ending task, it needs regular revisiting to check the destination is still right for us, to review how we are progressing and any adjustments to the journeys we need to make to get there in the time we set ourselves.

It’s a big task and the ExCo have dedicated time to work together to create this first iteration.

We have more to do and we will share our thinking with you all when we have completed this work.

As we head towards the weekend I wish everyone some rest and relaxation to recharge the batteries.

Keep safe and well.
