Week 3, Opportunity
This is week three for me and the Group’s new financial year too. In a blink of an eye we are two-thirds through February, and dreaming of pancake day, or is that only me 😍?
For those of us not living in a country where pancake day is celebrated, it has lots of significance for many reasons.
One key one for me is that this is the day where you give up something you enjoy (like cakes or chocolate) for a period up until Easter Sunday (early April).
This is the final opportunity to binge, and traditionally this has been on pancakes filled with lemon, bananas, sugar, chocolate or any topping of your choice… Oh and one more thing, and not to be recommended, but my two dogs have a little pancake each too.
Who can resist those big brown eyes waiting patiently?
OK, so before I lose myself in dreaming, let’s move on to what I am thinking about a lot this week and it is this…
Opportunity
There are many reasons why I have been thinking this. This week we are reporting our full year numbers for the previous 12 months.
This is the moment we can see the financial impact of all our work in the year. It’s only one measure of the success of a year but an important one none-the-less. I have been reading all the reports from the offices, businesses and countries across the whole of the Harvey Nash Group.
There are stories in each of these reports which tell the tales of where we have triumphed and really achieved heroic things, stories of difficult moments we have been faced with and above all of these the optimism and belief in our continued success and opportunity.
It’s still early for me in our great business as I haven’t been out to many of our Harvey Nash Group homes yet, but I am coming out soon and I know from the many conversations I have had that I will hear the same word again and again, that we have tremendous opportunity.
I continue to meet people inside and outside of our business and this week had a fantastic hour with Paul Smith who is the founding father of NashTech. Now there was a man who recognised opportunity and made something extraordinary happen in leading the way to building such a great business.
That’s the thing about opportunity, you have to recognise it in all its forms, that means constantly looking at what we do and how we do it with fresh eyes and then asking ourselves, what is the opportunity here is to do this faster, bigger, in new ways and then making it happen.
I have been speaking with Rob Grimsey about how we get a bigger voice in government, there is opportunity for us as a best loved technology and solutions brand to influence and shape the future in all the markets we work and live in around the world. I know we do a great job in Vietnam in this way, we can do this everywhere.
So now we are knocking on doors and it’s exciting to know that soon we will be at new tables exploring new opportunities.
I have been working with Rob and the leaders of the businesses across HNG on polishing off the fantastic work we have been doing on amplifying our brands and their part in the HNG family.
The opportunities here as a result of this work is that our clients of now and the future will better understand the value we can bring them and seek to work with us in new ways.
There are opportunities for us to understand how through this clarity of what and who we are that we can grow and extend our businesses. The list goes on and on as to the benefits that come from this work.
There are opportunities for us to learn and grow, to be even happier in our work. I am talking with many people across all countries and businesses to understand what we can do here. We will talk more about this in the coming weeks and months together.
I want to end this week by saying thank you to everyone who made last year happen in the HNG, for your great work, courage, persistence and for showing up every day wanting to do your best work. You make our business the great place it is. Let’s go find and make opportunities happen together.
Have a great weekend everyone.
